Why Use An Electric Fence For Dogs

Why would you consider an underground pet fence?Let me give you a few of my thoughts on why.It may change your mind.

I grew up in the country,it was wide open territory so no one thought much about letting their dogs to run loose. There was very little traffic and plenty of places for our dogs to safely roam.

We didn't think about tying up or penning in our dogs. They stayed close to home and didn't bother anyone. In fact we had one dog that when we went on a vacation for a week she would go down to the neighbours and adopt them until we returned. When we came home, there she was, sitting on the porch step wagging her tail as if to ask"Where did you guys go?".

Flash forward many years. The countryside has been eaten up by development.Shopping centers, housing tracts and offices now fill what used to be empty fields.Traffic jams the highway and we have the ever present hum of people.Leaving your dog to run loose is a surefire recipe for trouble.

You have few options now.You can pen your dog in a little cage or tied to a doghouse all day which is in my opinion very cruel. You can do what many people do which is to keep your dog inside your house all day except for the occasional walk.Less cruel but certainly not easy with everyones schedules nowadays. You can set up a dog run which is really not much more than a cable stretched between two posts.Or you can fence your yard.

Fencing a yard is probably the safest and most humane way of containing your dog.Unfortunately it has problems. The chief of which is cost.Fences are expensive to have installed and can be costly to maintain. That is assuming that your town or village will allow you to put one up.Many areas have rules now that prevent you from putting up a fence. They don't want your fence to distract from the"natural beauty" of the area.

Another problem with fences are that some dogs tend to dig under or climb over them. Not much of a deterrent if your dog defeats the fence is it?That leaves probably the final option which is an underground pet fence system.

An underground pet fence works on a simple principle.A transmitter is installed somewhere inside your house which "transmits" a signal to a wire buried in the ground around your house. This wire acts as a "receiver" that picks up the signal like your radio.

A special collar that your dog wears picks up that signal when your dog gets close to the wire. The signal activates the collar and your dog receives a slight shock. The shock lets him know that he has reached the boundary of your yard and that he should not go any farther.

It may seem cruel. But ask yourself this.Is it any less cruel using an underground pet fence than it is keeping a dog in a crate all day while you are out?Or chained to a doghouse?Your dog will learn quickly and so he won't be getting continual shocks.

An underground pet fence has the benefits of having less to maintain and it is of course under the ground where it won't visibly disturb the "view".Your dog won't dig under it since he would be in range of the signal. And the same can be said about going over it.

With today's society and all the rules and regulations not to mention lawsuits,an underground pet fence would seem to be an obvious choice to solve a problem before it becomes one.
